Link related content together

You can link the content of your project together using linked items elements. In this example, you will learn how to link articles about a similar topic. This scenario can be also adjusted to your liking, for example, to feature related products on an e-commerce site or to link authors to your blog posts.

Once your project starts growing, you might find it harder to navigate through all your linked content. This is where the Relations tab can come in handy. With a home item all set up, you can see the relationships of your linked items and what the structure of your website looks like within Kontent.

After adding linked items to the element, you can reorder, remove, or expand the items to open them for the view. To edit a specific content item, click  to open the content item for editing.

The linked content items are independent and can be accessed outside the content items they are used in. This means you only need to edit a specific linked item once and the changes will be automatically reflected everywhere. You can also publish all linked items along with your original article.

In the picture, you can see how the final result could look on a website.

    Making changes to published content

Once the Coffee processing techniques article is published, you cannot make any changes. To add new related content to a linked items element or update the content item itself, you first need to create a new version of the item or unpublish the item.

Checking your content structure via Relations tab

The Relations tab is a tool that provides you with a different view of your content items list. It can be used to display the hierarchy of the selected content item and its related items. The relationships between items can be created either by using linked items elements or by inserting the existing content items directly into a rich text element.

The top content item of the hierarchy is called a Home item. It could be a content item representing your landing page, the main screen of your app, or basically anything that's on the top of your content structure.

Showing relations for the Home item.

Under the home item, you can see all the content items that are linked inside. If some of these content items themselves have linked items inside, they can be expanded using the icon next to their name. Clicking the content item will redirect you to this item's editing page.

In each one of your projects, you can set up a default home item that the project members will see when opening the Relations tab for the first time. However, you can also select your own home item, which will be visible only to you.

Users with the Manage development settings permission can set their home item as a default home item for everyone in the project.

    Changing your home item

    To change the home item:

    2. Click the Relations tab.

    4. Select Change your home item.
    5. Select your new home item from the list.

If you decide to return back to the default home item, you can do this by clicking and selecting Back to default.
